Seminar. Course will provide an overview of theory, methods and assessment for bilingual education contexts. Students will develop foundational understandings in the following: (1) the cultural origins of language and literacy in a pluralistic society; (2) the historical and socio-political development of bilingual education in the United States, including but not limited to ¿ program models, language instruction, and bilingual education policy; (3) methods for teaching language instruction to native and non-native speakers of the English and the target language; (4) knowledge of inter-relatedness of language acquisition theory, language domains, language structure, forms and functions to deliver effective instruction in bilingual settings; (5) methods for teaching content instruction using English and the target language; (6) assessment development in English and the target language; and (7) techniques to differentiate instruction for students with special needs and exceptional students. Students seeking a bilingual authorization are strongly encouraged to take this course.
